چکیده

A major source of unwanted signals in seismic data recorded for geophysical exploration is the presence of guided waves which are scattered near the surface of the earth. These waves do not contain information on the structure of the deeper subsurface and should therefore be removed. In this paper we derive a method for removing this type of waves based on a modal expansion. The problem of nding an appropriate scatterer distribution is formulated as a minimization problem. We apply the method to simulated data and watertank data, and nd that the scattered guided waves are strongly attenuated and that the reeections of interest (from deeper layers) are not aaected.

Seismic Tomography

The inversion of seismic travel-time data for radially varying media was initially investigated by Herglotz, Wiechert, and Bateman (the HWB method) in the early part of the 20th century [1]. Tomographic inversions for laterally varying media began in seismology starting in the 1970's. This included early work by Aki, Christoffersson, and Husebye who developed an inversion technique for estimati...

Shear-Wave Dynamic Behavior using Two Different Orientations

For laterally complex media, it may be more suitable to take a different orientation of thedisplacement vector of Shear-waves. This may change the sign of several imaginary reflections andconversion coefficients to be used in reservoir characterization and AVO (Amplitude Versus Offset)analysis or modeling. In this new convention the positive direction of the displacement vector ofreflected Shea...

A two-dimensional hybrid method for modeling seismic wave propagation in anisotropic media

[1] A hybrid method is developed for calculating synthetic seismograms for seismic waves propagating in two-dimensional localized heterogeneous anisotropic media. The hybrid method is a combination of analytic and numerical methods, with the numerical method (finite difference, or FD) applied in the heterogeneous anisotropic region only and the analytic method (generalized ray theory, or GRT) o...

Applications of Inverse Methods to the Analysis of Refraction and Wide-angle Seismic Data

The refraction inverse problem was initially investigated by Herglotz (1907), Bateman (1910), and Wiechert and Geiger (1910) who applied Abel transforms for the inversion of seismic travel-times in radially varying media. For smoothly varying media in the absence of low velocity zones, this formulation provides an inverse solution which includes ray bending. In the presence of low velocity zone...

Modeling Seismic Attributes of Pn Waves using the Spectral-Element Method

To investigate the nature of Pn propagation, we have implemented the spectral-element method (SEM) for vertically and laterally varying media with and without attenuation. As a practical measure, essential features of the Pn waves are distilled into seismic attributes including arrival times, amplitudes and pulse frequencies. To validate the SEM simulations, we first compare the SEM results wit...
